The Check Card

  • How purchases made with your ATM and Check Card are posted to your account.

Your Check Card is a convenient and secure way to pay for purchases and get cash at ATMs. In general, any debit purchase or ATM withdrawal is immediately deducted from your account.

There are some important things you should know about this process to help you avoid overdrawing your account, or the inconvenience of a purchase being declined due to having insufficient funds available.

  • Funds placed on hold to cover purchase authorizations are not available for other transactions.

When you make a signature-based (non-PIN) purchase with your Check Card, sufficient funds are immediately placed on "hold" in your account to authorize the purchase. Certain purchases that do not require a written signature or PIN may also be placed on "hold," such as those made on the Internet or authorizations made at the gas pump. Even though a merchant may not receive payment for several days, the funds on hold are treated as if they were immediately paid, and are not available for other uses. The hold is removed and the purchase amount is posted to your account upon the Bank's receipt and processing of the merchant's supporting documentation.

  • PIN-based check card transactions are immediately withdrawn from your account.

Transactions that require you to enter your PIN to complete are not subject to holds and funds are withdrawn from your account the same day.

  • Credits for merchandise returns may not immediately post to your account.

If you make a purchase which results in a hold being placed on your account and then return the item shortly thereafter, the hold may not be immediately removed. It may take up to three (3) business days for these funds to become available again.

It is important to keep track of every transaction you make with your check card. Entering every purchase, check and ATM withdrawal into your check register immediately is the best way to maintain a record of the balance in your account and avoid possible overdraft fees or declined purchases.
